The environmental crisis is a design crisis. It is a consequence of how things are made, buildings are constructed, and landscapes are used.

For the first time in my lifetime, natural scientists are looking for help from humanists in knowing the world.

The Environmental Art and Design Seminar builds an interdisciplinary research community to study contemporary art and design that addresses ecological and environmental challenges. We approach the design and visualisation of environments in the broadest sense and ask how contemporary art and design promote knowledge of human and non-human ecologies and biodiversity and encourage sustainability and environmental responsibility. We also study the contribution of contemporary art and design to the environmental humanities, which advocate a renewed importance for the humanities in relation to the biological, earth and environmental sciences.
Our present research focus is upon the ecology, infrastructure, and architecture of Dublin and its environs, and the role of current art and design projects in ‘greening’ the city.
The Environmental Art and Design Seminar develops DIT’s contribution to the Irish Environmental History Network and, using the research networks of the Graduate School of Creative Arts and Media, will build research programmes and initiatives with national and international partners with an interest in the contribution of art and design to the environmental humanities.
