about 'the enquiry' seminar series

A seminar series rooted in contemporary curatorial discourse and experimental cultural practice which is driven by a key question adopted in advance of each session and to which participants prepare detailed responses. The process is driven by collaboration in developing a knowledge base on contemporary curatorial practices and debates. The seminar group will be visiting the Istanbul Biennale as part of their programme in late October 2009. (View Spring 2009 schedule of activities here.)

autumn semester 2009

  • 16/9/09 10:00-12:00

Building upon our discussion of Documenta 5, curated by Harald Szeemann, we will look at ROSC. These 'quadrennial' exhibitions of contemporary art took place between 1967 until 1988 and in many ways showcased a number of contemporary artists for the first time to a large public in Ireland. We will look at a number of different issues in relation to the series of exhibitions: Georgina- the legacy; Vaari- the exhibition (images); Clodagh- the function of the catalogue- in relation to the projects; Rana- other models; Sarah- the first ROSC in 1967; Mags- subsequent ROSC's- an overview; Jeanette- critical responses; Maeve- the context (culture and the state); Moran- the context (institution). A number of over-riding concerns are:
Was there a political imperative in relation to ROSC and its funding?
How does this project relate to other projects of the period, Documenta for example?
Dublin is proposing a Biennial to take place in 2012, what concerns are there around such a project?

  • 30/9/09 10:00-12:00

This session is looking at the last two editions of ROSC in 1984 and 1988 and why it did not continue after that. (There are a number of great resources such as NIVAL - ask for relevant folders - and Dorothy Walker's Modern Art in Ireland.
