The audience gathers for the launch at the Irish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. [6/6/09]
GradCAM will host the international launch of a new book by Maeve Connolly, entitled The Place of Artists’ Cinema: Space, Site and Screen (Intellect/University of Chicago Press, 2009), at the Irish Pavilion at Venice on Saturday June 6th at 6.30pm.
The Place of Artists' Cinema: Space, Site and Screen examines the relationship between place, site and cinema within contemporary art, focusing on a selection of multi-screen installations, site-specific projects and feature-length films produced over the past decade. It also explores changing structures of funding and exhibition, tracing the circulation of film and video works within public art contexts, galleries, museums, biennial exhibitions and art fairs. The book includes in-depth readings of works by Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Carlos Amorales, Gerard Byrne, Tacita Dean, Jeremy Deller, Stan Douglas, Willie Doherty, Pierre Huyghe, Jaki Irvine, Aernout Mik, Tobias Putrih, Anne Tallentire and Jane & Louise Wilson, among others.
The book will be launched by Dr. Paul O’Neill, curator, artist, writer and Research fellow with Situations at the University of the West of England, where he is leading the international research project 'Locating the Producers'.
Maeve Connolly is Lecturer in Film and Animation at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology, Dublin. Her writing has appeared in Afterimage, Artforum, Art Monthly, boundary 2, CIRCA, Contemporary, Screen, Third Text and Variant.
The launch will take place at the Irish Pavilion at the 53rd International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia, Istituto Provinciale per lInfanzia Santa Maria della Pietà, Calle della Pietà, Castello, 30122 Venice (located between San Marco and the Arsenale).
