art as experience
with prof. richard e siegesmund (phd) president, integrative teaching international (iti)
17:00 Wednesday 15th December GradCAM, John’s Lane West, Dublin 8
We are delighted to host this discussion on the aesthetic writings of John Dewey faciliated by Prof. Richard E Siegesmund, Associate Professor and Co Chair, Art Education, University of Georgia
Dewey’s work is particularly significant as marking a shift in aesthetic thinking. Rather than focusing on the individual art object, Dewey’s theory provides a new approach in engaging with the wider characteristics implicit in the ‘expressive object’ to include an understanding of the process in its entirety. Dewey’s aesthetics moves beyond an engagement with the art work by approaching it as the primary site for the dialectical processes of experience. Dewey’s development into theories surrounding ‘experience’ demonstrates the connections of art with everyday experience, aligning notions surrounding the individual, society, ethics, and responsibility with aesthetic discourse.
This session focuses on John Dewey's major writing on aesthetics - Art as Experience (1934).
The readings for this session are
Chapter1. The Live Creature
Chapter 2. The Live Creature and Etherial Things
Chapter 3. Having an Experience.
These texts are available at the front desk in the NCAD library.
